Restoring Peace, One Conversation at a Time

Across Rwanda, community leaders are helping families resolve conflicts, protect their rights, and discover a path toward lasting reconciliation.

What happens when a family dispute becomes too difficult to resolve? For many families in Rwanda, disagreements over land, marriage, property, or children's rights can lead to years of conflict, costly legal proceedings, and strained relationships.

But through mediation, a different path is becoming possible.

Through our partnership with African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM-Rwanda), Rise Up Woman International is helping strengthen access to mediation services that bring people together to listen, find common ground, and work toward peaceful resolutions.

And the impact is reaching beyond individual families.

In July, approximately 350 community members gathered in Rwanda's Musanze District, where local leaders included mediation awareness as part of a larger community meeting. Participants learned how mediation offers a more accessible and affordable way to resolve disputes, particularly for vulnerable families.

During the gathering, five cases received guidance, and three disputes were successfully resolved.

Meanwhile, collaboration between trained community volunteers, local government leaders, and accredited lawyer-mediators is growing across Musanze and Rubavu Districts.

Recent reports highlighted successful mediation in cases involving divorce, family property divisions, land disagreements, and contracts. These resolutions represent more than legal agreements. They offer families an opportunity to move forward, rebuild relationships, and focus on their futures rather than prolonged conflict.

For women, access to mediation can be especially transformative.

Women facing marital conflict, property disputes, or challenges involving their children often encounter barriers to accessing justice. Having a safe, neutral space where their voices can be heard is an important step toward protecting their rights and strengthening their communities.

Building on this progress, ALARM-Rwanda is exploring the establishment of two dedicated Mediation Houses in Musanze and Rubavu, along with mobile mediation services that would bring support directly into communities.

This vision would make mediation more accessible to women and families who face financial or geographic barriers to traditional legal services.

At Rise Up Woman International, we believe empowering women includes ensuring their voices are heard, their rights are respected, and their families have opportunities to thrive.

Because sometimes, lasting transformation begins with a conversation that leads to peace
