From Savings to Small Businesses

Across Rwanda, graduates of the Women’s Leadership Training Initiative are turning lessons into action, building businesses, strengthening families, and lifting one another up.

For Nyiramana, a small amount of savings became the beginning of something much bigger.

Through a savings group formed by graduates of the Women's Leadership Training Initiative (WLTI), she was able to save money, access a small loan, and begin selling vegetables and other goods to help provide for her family.

Her story is one of many examples of what happens when women have the knowledge, confidence, and community to pursue economic independence.

And these women aren't just building businesses. They're building each other up.

Across Rwanda's Northern and Western Provinces, WLTI graduates continue meeting regularly to save money, share skills, encourage one another, and grow their income-generating activities.

In Musanze, women recently gathered for an economic empowerment conference focused on family and business budgeting, avoiding unnecessary debt, identifying business opportunities, and building confidence as entrepreneurs.

The women also strengthened their shared savings practices, committing to responsible borrowing and reinvesting in their businesses.

But perhaps one of the most beautiful examples of this community comes from the way these women care for one another.

When one member lost her husband, women from the Northern WLTI group and HUMURA MUGORE in the Western Province came together to provide food and start-up capital, helping her restart her income-generating activity during a difficult season.

This is what empowerment looks like when it extends beyond the individual.

In the Western Province, women continue gathering to build their collective savings and strengthen their businesses. Leaders like Patricia are helping sustain this momentum through weekly savings meetings, creating opportunities for women to grow their resources together.

Through our partnership with African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM-Rwanda), Rise Up Woman International celebrates the continued growth of these women long after their initial leadership training.

Their stories remind us that education and empowerment don't end when a training program concludes. They continue as women put their knowledge into practice, strengthen their families, and become catalysts for transformation in their communities.

One small business. One savings group. One woman encouraging another. Together, they are creating lasting change.
