Empowering Women Through Seeds & Gardens
The Maasai culture is a majorly patriarchal culture. Property is primarily owned by men even though the women are the ones majorly tasked with taking care of the property.
In April, 66 women leaders and 10 male pastors gathered for a Women’s Leadership workshop on Economic Empowerment & Community Transformation. This workshop was facilitated in partnership with ALARM-Kenya and Elyon Women Initiatives.
The aim of the training was to help the participants engage in holistic transformation through involvement in activities designed to have a direct impact in their personal economic development.
As a result of this workshop:
The participants received expert training in gardening from a local agronomist.
The women have committed to starting individual gardens *the property for planting and seeds were provided to them.
The participants agreed to start a communal seed nursery for spinach, kale, onions, tomatoes, and other vegetables.
The women agreed that farming chickens would be a beneficial source of additional income and have committed to making efforts toward raising chickens.
The women divided into groups by county and will register their groups in the community to access opportunities within the county.
