Women Learning to Sew in Rwanda

From handmade clothing to new financial skills, women and girls in Rwanda are gaining practical skills through the Humura Mugore Sewing Project.

Skirts, dresses, sweaters, scarves, and more! At the Humura Mugore Sewing Project in Rwanda, young women and girls are putting their creativity to work as they learn valuable tailoring and knitting skills.

After six months of training, students are already demonstrating an impressive range of abilities.

In tailoring classes, they have learned to create skirts with zippers, pockets, and linings, along with collared shirts, blouses, dresses, and shorts. Meanwhile, knitting students are producing sweaters in various styles, scarves, and hats.

And they're just getting started!

During an October visit, our partners at African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM-Rwanda) observed the students' progress and explored opportunities to strengthen the program.

As students continue developing their skills, the training will expand from six months to 12 months, including a one-month internship. Future lessons will introduce more advanced techniques, with plans to teach students how to make school bags, handbags, and additional clothing designs.

But the training goes beyond learning to sew.

Students are also being encouraged to save money together through a rotating savings group, with the goal of purchasing their own sewing machines after completing the program. Recognizing the importance of financial independence, the students have requested additional training in savings and financial management.

They have also expressed interest in emotional healing sessions to help them navigate personal challenges and strengthen their well-being.

Through our partnership with ALARM-Rwanda, Rise Up Woman International celebrates initiatives like Humura Mugore that equip women and girls with practical skills and opportunities for continued growth.

Every new skill learned represents another step toward greater confidence, independence, and opportunity.

As these students continue their training, we're excited to see how their creativity, determination, and growing abilities shape what comes next.
