Updates From Mathare

Women were selected from the community of Mathare to participate in a nine-month development initiative. These women and so many in this informal settlement face extremely challenging life circumstances that make them increasingly vulnerable. We just received this report from our field partner, ALARM (African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries), led by Rachel Mutai who just completed a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness and prevention training

Rise Up, in partnership with ALARM-Kenya, implemented a GBV awareness training for the women who have participated in the Building Resilience Among Widows and Single Mothers project. This workshop was implemented to increase GBV awareness and respond to GBV by integrating preventive approaches by decreasing stress and managing conflict, especially within households. This workshop and GBV awareness are foundational aspects to the work being done in Kenya as we work to empower women and girls to reshape their communities by breaking cycles of violence, injustice, and inequality.

33 women

participated in a gender-based violence awareness and prevention training.

Every Number = Real Women.

Here’s a Recap.

51 women

attended a 3-day trauma healing training.

45 women

attended a 3-day training on business skills.

40 women

received funds to invest in capital. 27 used the funds for their existing businesses and 13 used the funds to start a business.

5 women

gained hands-on training as apprentices in hairdressing and beauty.

14 women

learned soap-making to generate income.

The heart of this work is to help remove overwhelming obstacles of discrimination, inequality, violence, and cultural traditions that oppress women and girls and ultimately limits their ability to reshape their lives and offer their wisdom and brilliance to create positive change in their families and community.
