Business Check-In

In 2021, Rise Up began an initiative in partnership with ALARM Kenya to come alongside 54 vulnerable women in Mathare, Kenya. This initiative provided psychosocial support, capital injection for businesses, and training in gender-based violence awareness, business skills, vocational skills, and trauma awareness.

In September, our field partners followed up with these women to monitor the effectiveness and sustainability of this initiative. We are so excited to hear about the progress of some of those who were a part of this work!

Meet Monicah, a single mother of two.

Monicah is a hairdresser who received a capital injection which enabled her to purchase essential products to run her business.

Meet Rose, a widow and mother of two.

Rose loves to knit and is using her skills to earn an income. With business skills training and capital injection, Rose has been equipped to thrive in her business start-up.

Meet Lucy, a single mother of five.

Because of this initiative, Lucy learned how to run her business efficiently. Lucy’s business was challenged during the economic crisis, and because of the capital injection she received, her business survived, and she continues to sell snacks for a living.

Meet Mary, a widow and mother of four.

Covid had a negative impact on Mary’s business of selling bedsheets but because of this initiative, Mary was able to switch her business and now sells food to earn an income.

Meet Ann, a single mother.

Ann went through the apprenticeship training and has taken her learned tailoring skills and tailoring kit to earn an income.

These faces remind us of our WHY.

“I am happy that Rise Up and ALARM has enabled me to pursue my passion and generate income so I can take care of my children.”
